Death on the Beach

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As I sat there on the beach, my dinner within reach
Eating and watching the scattered surfers as the sun set into the water
As I sighed contentedly to myself and said, to air, "Hello."

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As I sat there on the beach, the clouds almost within reach
Eating and watching those ruby clouds as the sun set into the water
As I sighed, Death sat down next to me and said "Hello."

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As I sat there on the beach, Death almost within reach
Eating and watching this robed and hooded man sit next to me
As I sighed amusingly to myself and said, to Death, "Hello."

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As Death asked to me, "Why do you sit here on the beach
Eating and watching the waves come in and the surfers on them?"
As I sighed amusingly to myself and said nothing.

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As Death asked to me, "Why do you sit here on the beach
Wasting your life eating and watching and sighing and talking?"
As I shook my head to myself and listened.

It was very quiet on the beach that evening
As I sat there on the beach, Death walking out of reach
A dark hooded man ambling along the sullen quiet beach
As I sighed contentedly to myself and said, to Death, "Goodbye."
